Lipstick and scratching, Victoria line, 1st August 2013

I’ve never thought make-up could be entertaining.

On a commute during a Thursday morning rush hour I was entertained for a few minutes watching someone apply make-up. It’s a skill to be able to apply cosmetics like lipstick either during stops at station or, more impressively, while the train is moving. Other behaviour, less appealing, was catching an old woman scratching, perhaps she was readjusting clothing.

The sketch for this was done on an iPhone, which recorded what people did, their positions relative to each other and details like colour. After work, once I was home, I transfered the file to my iPad and from there worked the sketch up to the completed drawing. Either on purpose or by accident, I left out elements such as people standing up, and the woman applying lipstick did have a bag and sunglasses.
